Swag and Sorcery
📖 3 minutes

The plot in a paragraph

You are serving a king whose priorities might seem a bit off, focusing entirely on clothing and fashion. Allegedly, his “special clothes” have been stolen. You have been tasked to put the whole kingdom’s resources into the holy quest of retrieving said clothes. During this whole bizarre event, the king’s advisor starts to get angry and masterminds a coup from the shadows. Also, there is a very cool talking black cat. I would never forget the very cool talking black cat.

Gameplay

Swag and Sorcery blends traditional town-building mechanics with dungeon-crawling elements. The whole game is VERY grindy, but it maintains an adequate difficulty for most players. There is an interesting balance that needs to be maintained in the gear department: you need equipment for battle but also for fashion competitions! I have to confess that having a traditional dungeon-crawling mentality, and always trying to max out stats, cost me a couple of competitions.

What is missing?

A better inventory organization. It’s fine in the early game, but when you start accumulating lots of equipment it starts getting confusing.

Also, it would be interesting to have a separate slot for competition equipment. I’ve lost count how many times I equipped a character with fashionable equipment and forgot to swap before entering a dungeon. I know there are 4 different slots of equipment sets per character, but these can not be accessed in the competition dressing room.

Also, it would be cool to be able to have some extra filters for equipment, namely to filter for colour and/or material.

What made me giggle

The black cat is a highlight! I LOVE cats, so I might be a bit biased, but I can assure you that the black cat will get a few laughs out of you.

I’m also a big fan of nonesense humour. When you unlock a new stable,

the horses are delivered using party balloons. It is a very silly thing, but totally inline with the game’s spirit and I love it.

Do I recommend playing it?

I would definitely recommend this game if you are looking for something that is mostly straightforward with a very balanced difficulty level. I will go out on a limb and say that this a cosy game despite the combat theme, and well suited for casual gaming sessions.

The tutorial videos were glitchy and the game crashed from time to time. However, due to the solid autosave feature, I never lost any progress. These crashes were actually a good thing, since the game can have a bit of an hypnotic effect at times. They were a good reminder that I have to be a responsible adult. Please note that I played this game on Linux through Proton, I have no idea if this happens on Windows. Aside from that was a pretty smooth experience.

I feel like the it is a bit pricey (12.79€ when I got the game in January 2023). If you find it on sale, I would say go for it. I got it as part of Humble Choice, so this was not an issue for me.

I will probably not play it again. The game has not been updated since November 2020 (version 1.54), and I think I got the full experience. Unfortunately I did not manage to complete it because the game became a bit too time consuming I eventually decided to move on.
